| Wuf manages the transportation and disposition
of all types of batteries, from lead-acid truck batteries to hearing aid
button cells. With this range in batteries, there’s an almost equally broad
range in handling, packaging, and transportation
options, and in the ultimate
fate of used batteries.
For example, lead acid batteries can generate meaningful
revenue for their scrap lead content, while many small rechargeables must
be handled, transported, and disposed of as hazardous materials.
The following
are only a selection of the battery types handled by the Wuf. If you
have batteries not listed here, please contact us for specific information
regarding handling, transportation, and disposition.

BATTERY PACKAGING
Large
Lead-Acid (Automotive) Batteries
Large lead-acid batteries must be secured directly to
four-way pallets.
A standard pallet is 48" by 40" or 48" by
42". The term "four way" means that the pallet has forklift or
pallet jack slots on all four sides of the pallet. All pallets used for
shipping must be sturdy and unbroken. Wuf cannot receive materials shipped on
odd sized pallets.
 | Shrink wrap is unacceptable for lead-acid batteries because of
their weight. |
 | Batteries must be secured to pallets with metal or fiber
strapping. |
 | Batteries can be placed on pallets in only a single layer. |
If
this is your first time shipping lead-acid batteries with Wuf, contact
us for
specific shipping instructions.
Rechargeable
Batteries (NiCd, NiMH, small sealed lead acid, etc.)
Rechargeable batteries must be placed in sealed 5-gallon
pails. They must be packed in a way that eliminates the
possibility of short circuit and attendant spark/fire hazard. Pails must be
secured directly to four-way pallets.

Single-Use Batteries (AAA through D, 9-Volt, etc.)
NOTE: Most single-use household batteries do not contain
mercury or other hazardous materials, and do not require special handling or
disposal. Contact us if you have questions.

TRANSPORTATION
For single-use and rechargeable batteries, the Network
typically organizes "milk run" collection, in which we coordinate a pickup
from several members in order to minimize handling and transportation costs
to each institution. Lead-acid batteries are almost always a special case;
when you place a service request, we’ll contact you to discuss and confirm
specific packaging and transportation arrangements.
SCHEDULING
Please give the Network as much lead time as possible
in advance of your required pickup date. More time gives us more choice
of markets and transportation options, and allows us to coordinate efficient
milk run pickup from multiple Network members. These translate into the
most favorable economics for our members.
PRICING
Prices vary over time, and are affected by the size and
composition of your load and by variable transportation costs. Network
members should be aware that (because of their hazardous material content),
there is a cost associated with the proper disposal of fluorescent light
tubes and ballasts. When you place a request for service, the Network will
provide a written price quote for your acceptance before scheduling pickup
and disposition.
